As with any other netbook, be it Asus or another manufacturer, prices on the Eee PC 901 prices will vary depending on the specifications you want and type of netbook deal you want. Buying a Linux version generally means that you'll get a slightly higher specification on the hardware. The Windows XP Home Edition models are cheaper but have less storage. As with the Eee PC 900, the 901 uses the Linux GPL covered OS which means it's free to use, upgrade or whateve else you want to do with it.

The Eee PC 901 also ships with Windows - the proprietary software from Microsoft. Although XP is scheduled for retirement the code is still closed source - only Microsoft, or licensed partners, can legally access and modify the source code. Microsoft charges for the use of their software and limits the software that can be installed on netbooks so don't expect to see Vista on a netbook anytime soon.

Which Eee PC is the best?

The choice is yours. There's no great hardship in learning a new piece of software even if you go back to Windows afterwards. The Eee PC 901 is easy to use whichever netbook variant you choose. Remember, just like the Eee 900, the 901 also comes with other open source software such as Open Office (a FREE Office repalacement then the Linux variant may be just what you're after. Although the Linux version of the Eee PC 901 may take some getting used, there is a massive bonus that will interest users - free software. Developers of Linux are passionate about the operating system AND the applications that sit on top of it. Many of the Linux distributions have a huge number of applications that can be downloaded and install absolutely free of charge (take a look at Debian Linux). There are even commercial companies that have released open source versions of their software.

Admittedly, some of this free software doesn't give you the full functionality of a commercial version but you have to look at it another way - how many of use an application such Word to its full extent? Some IT workers I know only use a fraction of Words capabilities on their netbooks and they're regular users, day in, day out.

With those points in mind, you can make your decision. Either go for the familiar look and feel of Windows on Asus hardware or decide to learn a bit more about how your computer works and buy the Linux version.
